Marking 50 Years of Royal Warrants

A Royal Beginning: The Queen Mother and the Legacy of HALCYON DAYS

The story of HALCYON DAYS is one rooted in traditional British craftsmanship, however, perhaps one of the most defining moments in the brand's history came in 1970, when it caught the discerning eye of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, a moment that would define HALCYON DAYS and launch a longstanding Royal relationship.

The First Royal Commission

Founded in 1950 by Susan Benjamin, HALCYON DAYS began as a small emporium of antique gifts and curiosities in Mayfair, London. In 1970, it became the sole reviver of the art of English enamelling, a centuries-old artform which had been almost completely lost, and it was this blend of artistry and British tradition that first appealed to the Queen Mother.

In 1970, Her Majesty, commissioned a special enamel box from HALCYON DAYS, depicting her London residence, Clarence House. This exquisite piece marked the company's very first Royal commission. The Queen Mother's appreciation for the detail, artistry, and heritage behind HALCYON DAYS' enamel boxes sparked a relationship that would blossom over the years.

A Warrant of Distinction

Just two years later, in 1972, HALCYON DAYS was awarded its first Royal Warrant by The Queen Mother, officially recognising the company as the supplier of objets d'art to the Royal Household. It was a monumental honour - one that affirmed the brand's place among the finest British craftsmanship and opened the door to further Royal Commissions.

What is a Royal Warrant?

A Royal Warrant is an official endorsement granted by a member of the British Royal family to businesses or individuals who have supplied goods or services to the Royal household for many years. This prestigious honour signifies quality, reliability, and excellence, allowing the warrant holders to display the Royal coat of arms on their products and branding.

A Royal Legacy

The Queen Mother's influence on HALCYON DAYS is not only historic but also heartfelt. Her initial support set the tone for decades of Royal patronage and helped shape the identity of the brand as we know it today.

By the late 1980s, HALCYON DAYS had earned all four Royal Warrants then in existence, including those granted by HM Queen Elizabeth II, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, and HRH The Prince of Wales. Today, HALCYON DAYS remainsthe only supplier of objets d'art to the Royal Household, and in 2024 was honoured to recieve the new Royal Warrant by His Majesty King Charles III.

To honour this Royal legacy, HALCYON DAYS continues to make exquisite commemorative pieces, including limited edition enamel boxes featuring portraits and tributes to The Queen Mother, as well as fine bone china collections such as The Castle of Mey Collection, inspired by the gardens which the Queen Mother loved so dearly - each piece a celebration of Royal heritage and traditional British craftsmanship. While HALCYON DAYS continues to innovate and adapt in a modern world, its connection to The Queen Mother remains a cornerstone of its story.
